The distance of 10,000 miles between Berkeley and Bollywood was bridged in two and a half hours on the evening of February 5th at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco by eight college teams from California. These teams came together to participate in Bollywood Berkeley: the 4th Annual Intercollegiate Hindi Film Dance Competition. This annual contest, organized by the Indus group, is a 20-year-old South Asian socio-cultural student assemblage of the University of California, Berkeley. "Though at present there is no national competition where the winners of Bollywood Berkeley advance to, there is an organization on the East Coast that is planning to initiate a competition along the lines of Bollywood Berkeley," said Prasid Pathak, the PR Director of the Indus group. For now, the state of Hollywood hosts this tryst on Bollywood beats. The eight teams, vying for $2000 in prize money and priceless popularity amongst the student community in California, were from the best of California Colleges - Stanford, University of California: Berkeley, University of Los Angles, University San Diego, University of Santa Barbara, University of Riverside, University of Irvine and University of Southern California. The contestants had to showcase their talent in a holistic presentation, including a humorous introduction to their institution by the master(s) of ceremony, a video-clip mimicking the everlasting theme of love in the college campuses in its various hues (the Bollywood style), and then the gyrations on Hindi film rhymes. Each team had eight minutes to display its entire routine and impress. The five-member jury consisted of professional dancers and dance academy instructors with classical South Asian dance experience.
