In each of its diverse productions, Castillo provides a creative environment in which people of all ages can produce and experience theatre that deals with contemporary and historical social issues. The Castillo Theatre was established in 1984 by a collective of political activist/artists. Privately funded from the beginning, Castillo's work features improvisation, the works of the late Fred Newman and of German avant-gardist and Brecht protg, Heiner Mller (among others), and youth productions. It serves as a multi-racial home for Black theatre, and since 2007, has enjoyed a producing partnership with Woodie King, Jr.s New Federal Theatre. Castillo has a long tradition of using selected opening nights as an opportunity to recognize and support community-based, non-profit cultural organizations. The Castillo Theatre is a program of the All Stars Project, Inc., and works side by side with its youth programs, the All Stars Talent Show Network, the Development School for Youth, and the performance school, Youth Onstage! Castillo serves as the theatre department of UX, an education and development initiative that offers free workshops and cultural outings for people of all ages.
