Deepak Ram: Bansuri Concert with Enayat and Kanoa

To listen to Deepak Ram's music is to immediately be transported by the gravitas and sheer depth he brings to his work. His immense knowledgeability only furthers his entrancing and charming stage presence. With a masters degree in music from Rhodes University, Deepak’s holds a number of accolades to his name including Best Instrumental Album and Best Male Artist from the South African Music Awards. Tabla artist: Enayat Hossain Guest jazz artist: Kanoa Mendenhall, bassist About Deepak: Senior disciple of world-renowned bansuri maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Deepak holds a number of accolades to his name including: Best Instrumental Album, Best Male Artist, and more from the South African Music Awards (SAMAs). Deepak has eleven solo albums to his credit and as a session musician can be heard on over sixty albums. His bansuri can also be heard on movie soundtracks, such as “The Fast And The Furious”, “Matrix Revolutions”, “India, Kingdom of the Tiger”, “Stealth” and “Before The Rains”. An accomplished international soloist, Deepak began his formal training in bansuri and tabla under Sri Jeram Bhana in South Africa in 1975, and has spent time to study flute under the late Sri Suryakant Limaye (India's master flute maker); and under Pandit Vijay Raghav Rao until finally becoming the student of Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. During this period he also studied tabla under Sri Yashwant Padhye and music theory and voice under Pandit Rajaram Shukla. Deepak earned a Masters degree in Music (MMus) from Rhodes University, South Africa, in 1996 for his thesis, “Exploring Syncretism Between Indian and Western Music Through Composition”. About Enayat: Enayet Hossain was born into a musical family, his grandfather, the late great Ustad Kader Buksh was acknowledged as one of India's foremost musicologist/musician. Enayet learned the tabla from his father, Ustad Hamid Hossain. He has 14 compact disc recordings available where he is featured. He has received many citations from the state of Maryland for his outstanding contributions to the propagation of Indian music and its synthesis in American society including a grant from the Governor of Maryland as an artist in residence. With a computer science background, Enayat is co-author and producer of Sangeetpedia, an online encyclopedia of Indian Music encompassing the 4000 year old tradition of Indian music. About Kanoa: Kanoa Mendenhall is a bassist currently living in New York City. Born into a musical family, at a young age Kanoa moved to California from her hometown in Japan, and by age 13 she was regularly working in the Monterey and SF Bay Area music scenes. Kanoa moved to NYC four years ago to study at Columbia University, and recently graduated this past May majoring in East Asian Studies. She has performed and toured with Bruce Forman, Cecil McBee, Allison Miller, Ron Carter, María Grand, Roy McCurdy, Joel Ross, and has recorded with Lew Soloff, Tom Pierson, and Pheeroan AkLaff.
