The 24th annual Bhangra Blowout competition will be held on April 8th, 2017 at the Lisner Auditorium in Foggy Bottom, Washington, DC. Bhangra is an exciting, beat-intensive music and folk dance style, originating hundreds of years ago in the Punjab region of South Asia. The dance is traditionally performed as a celebration during occasions such as Vaisakhi (the beginning of the harvest), weddings, birthdays, and other auspicious events. This artform has become a force of South Asian expression in the United States with both independent and collegiate teams forming throughout the nation. Bhangra Blowout is the oldest and one of the largest intercollegiate bhangra competitions in the country. As an entirely student-run event, it is the product of massive teamwork from members of The George Washington University’s South Asian Society. Each year, Bhangra Blowout supports a charity to which a portion of the proceeds from the show go. This year, the board has chosen to support The Malala Fund, and its mission of empowering girls to complete 12 years of safe, quality education. This year’s show has eight competing teams from all across the country. They represent the best Bhangra talent of the collegiate circuit and make up an amazing lineup. The show will feature Virginia School of Bhangra, UMD Moksha, and DC Metro Punjabi Arts Academy as exhibition acts, as well. The show is going to be incredible and follow in Bhangra Blowout’s impressive tradition of dancing excellence. We hope to see you there!
