Bhangra is an energetic folk dance and music style that originated in Punjab, India that was traditionally used by villagers to celebrate the harvest season. Over the years, the dance style has gained popularity in North America and with western influences, it has evolved into a performance dance that is performed by youth at cultural events, parties and dance shows. Teams from universities, cultural academies and independent associations take part in competitions for prizes.FAUJ was founded when ex-captains of various competitive bhangra teams joined forces to not only increase exposure of this Punjabi folk dance to the local Boston community but to leave a mark on the international competitive dance circuit as well. The collective dancing experience on FAUJ is immense and it has culminated in a distinct "FAUJ" identity. "Fauj", in Hindi/Punjabi, means "army" and we are just that - we are an army of brothers united by our passion for bhangra. Since its formation two years ago, the team has competed at nine competitions across North America and brought trophies back to Boston at the last eight. In the past year, the team has been hailed as one of the most up and coming team from the US East coast by the bhangra community and has had that distinction re-affirmed through invites and bids from premier events like Elite 8 Bhangra Invitational and Best of the Best. In addition to competing, the team is active in the local Boston community and performs regularly at community shows, college events, weddings and banquet-hall events.
